Inventor, Aviation Pioneer. Born Winfield Bertrum Kinner in Iowa, he was an aircraft engine designer, constructor and founded the Kinner Airplane & Motor Corporation in Glendale California, in 1920. He produced some of early aircraft's most radical engines and invented the compound folded airplane wing. After taking her first flying lesson, he sold Amelia Earhart her first plane, a prototype Kinner Airster three-cylinder powered biplane. In the 1920s, the Kinner Airster was used to set a world high altitude record of 14,000 ft for women pilots, the first of the many records set by Earhart. He continued to produce a series of engines powered aircraft in the 1930s and also a series of Kinner engines powered the US Army Air Corps' PT-22 trainers during World War II.
