Montrose Recorder, Feb 27 1914 - The death of no man living would have given us a greater shock or produced deeper sorrow than did the death of our very dear brother, John Rayburn Cordry. He was born in Buchanan County, Mo., April 9th 1850. When he was about two years of age his parents moved to Cooper county. He was one of twelve children, four brothers and seven sisters. His father, mother, one brother and four sisters, preceded him to the great beyond. His father died Dec. 7th 1896 and mother Feb. 11, 1911. He was married to Sophia Downs, October 19th 1871. To this union were born, five children, one dying in infancy. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. Those living are Claude W. and Nora Pearl of Montrose, Myrtle I. and Clyde C. of Otterville, Mo. He professed religion and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church in 1872, was elected elder of the Pleasant Hill congregation in 1887 and remained an elder there until the spring of 1911 when he moved his membership to Montrose congregation in Henry county, Mo., and was elected elder and remained so until his death. He was superintendent of the Sunday School. He died Sunday morning Feb. 15, 1914 age 63 years, 10 months and 6 days. Truly a great man has fallen in our midst. We cannot think of anyone who will ever be able to fill his place in the church of his choice, but we are hoping and praying that his mantle may fall on his sons. The writer assisted by Rev. Whitehead of Otterville, his former pastor, preached his funeral to a large crowd of five or six hundred people, after which we laid all of him that was mortal in the tomb in the cemetery at Otterville. That which made him so good and so true has gone to swell with the immortals. He has gone to be with those he loved and lost awhile, who had crossed the stream of death before, and whom he had prepared to meet in the land of peace and blessedness. The father, mother and other loved ones that had gone before, to whose memories he was so constant and true have welcomed him to that home where there are no graves, no death, no tears, no parting. Kind, brave, gentle, heroic friend we wave thee our parting salutation and our tenderest benedictions. We shall always feel the power and impress of thy example and the encouragement which comes from a beautiful and unselfish life. We rejoice that thou hast entered upon they reward which the son of God died to give those who put their trust in him. Words cannot express how keenly we feel our loss. The loss seems irreparable and would seem unbearable but for the assurance we have that we shall soon meet again. May God's richest blessings rest upon his loved ones that are left behind is the prayer of his pastor and his church. - W. S. Winstead.
