Famous opera singer. Born in Indianapolis, IN, she moved with her family to Riverside in 1887. She graduated from Riverside High School in 1893 and during the graduation ceremony, at Riverside's Loring Opera House, she performed her first public solo. Encouraged by the community, and with contributions from local businessmen, she studied opera in Boston, MA, under maestro Charles R. Adams. She then traveled to Italy for additional tutoring. While in Italy her tutor changed her name to Marcella, and she started receiving leading operatic roles. Her biggest success came after she moved to Germany where she became a lead with the Munich Opera. After leaving Germany in 1932, she returned to Riverside and lived in her Prospect Avenue home until her death.Opera Singer. In 1887 she moved to Riverside, California with her family and upon graduating from Riverside High School, she performed hoe first public solo at Riverside's Loring Opera House. Although her career primarily kept her in Europe, she regularly returned to Riverside where she frequently sang at the annual Easter Sunrise Service on Mount Rubidoux. She died at the age of 85.
