Rev. Lawrence B. Smith served as a Signaler with The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in WW1. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Sanctuary Wood on June 2, 1916.
He was placed in a POW Camp in Belgium which he managed to escape from but was later recaptured and placed in another POW Camp in Cologne, Germany. He also escaped from here and made his was to the South of Holland on Nov. 10th 1918.
Ironically, Lawrence's Son, F/O Lawrence "Lindsay" Smith would be killed when his Lancaster Bomber was shot down by a Night Fighter over the South of Holland on the night of April 26/27, close to the very place where he had sought refuge some 26 years earlier.
