Monroe Childs was 36, and living in Fremont Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. A of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 10, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861.

Childs became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 12, 1863.

Childs was taken prisoner at White's Station, Tennessee, on Dec 14, 1864. He was later mustered out of the service on June 7, 1865, at Clinton, Iowa, as a paroled Prisoner of War on furlough under War Dept. telegraphic order dated May 12, 1865.
