Veteran of WWI . . . practiced medicine while serving as a first lieutenant in the Army medical corps
. . . . . . . . . .
Dr. Thomas S. Barkley, 79, whose medical practice in Rockdale spanned 53 years and a world of changes in his profession, died at 10:30 p.m. at his home here Friday night. Dr. Barkley died suddenly of a heart attack as he was preparing to go to bed at the end of a typical active day for him. Mrs. Barkley, his wife of 52 years, was with him when the end came, quickly and peacefully. "The good doctor," as he was known and called by thousands of friends from all walks of life, continued an active practice even through the day of his death. Friday, he had kept his usual hours at the same downtown, second-story office which he occupied throughout his local practice. . . . It is estimated that Dr. Barkley delivered some 5,000 babies during his 53 years of practice, [and one of them was the creator of this page] . . . from his full obituary in the Rockdale Reporter, February 1965
