ALONZO RAY
---The death of Alonzo S. Ray, former mayor of La Plata and Prominently connected with the business circles of the town, occurred February 19. He was eighty-four years old and had been a Mason for the past sixty-three years. He organized the first telephone service in the town, running a farmer's line from Locust Hill to the Goodding and Williams Store. Later he organized the La Plata Telephone Company and was the first president.
---The La Plata Saving Bank, which was a private institution from 1876 to 1882, was then organized under the State Law and Mr. Ray was a charter member of the Board of Directors. He served in the capacity over thirty-five years until retired at his own request because of his infirmities.
---Mr. Ray was president of the La Plata Fair Association and a leader during its successful years from 1885-1907. Active in all charitable and religious activities, he was, at the time of his death, president emeritus of the board of officers of the Christian Church and president of the Community Charity Board.
---He came to Missouri from Kentucky in 1862, served as a private in the Southern Army, returned to his farm near La Plata where he lived until he came to this city in 1891.
---His wife died in 1919. There were no children. He is survived by one brother, Wallace B. Ray and one sister, Mrs. Johannah Merreui of Louisville, Kentucky. A nephew, Howard L. Light of Louisville arrived ..........ing following the interment which was under the auspices of the Masonic Brotherhood. The only relatives in Missouri are cousins, J.B. Spencer of La Plata and Charles Spencer of Jefferson City.
---A man of sterling integrity, kind and charitable disposition and generous in support of church and civic finances. He was held in the highest esteem in the community. A recent visit from the Royal Men's Bible Class filled him with joy and his blessing was given to them with eyes shining with tears and happiness mingled. It will need a stat-wart man to arise and fill the place held by Alonzo S. Ray in this community.
