Memorial Rites To Be Held For Berrien Boy

BERRIEN CENTER, May 31 - Memorial services will be held June 3 at the Eau Claire Community church for Pfc. Robert Duane Strong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Strong of Berrien Center. The family request no flowers. Pfc. Strong was killed May 18 in the Pacific Area, and the parents were notified of his death through a telegram from the war department. Robert was born in Berrien township, Aug. 14, 1925 and graduated from Berrien Springs high school in 1943. He entered military service as a Marine in June 1944 and received his boot training at San Diego, Calif. He later trained at Camp Pendleton, Ocean Side, Calif. He was sent overseas in Nov., 1944, spending some time in Hawaii and then went to Okinawa March 1. He leaves besides his parents, two brothers, Lucian E. of Berrien Center and J. Wesley of Buchanan; a grandmother, Mrs. Mary E. Kelsey. (The News-Palladium, Benton Harbor, MI, Thursday, May 31, 1945, p. 10, Col. 2)
