NORTH STREET -- Wesley J. Brown, 81, of North Street passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, after an illness of three months.


He was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Port Huron and was a lifelong area resident.


He married Nina M. Van Valkenburgh on Aug. 2, 1941 in Port Huron.


He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in England and France.


Wesley worked for St. Clair County for 45 years in the addressograph (later the land and graphics) department, retiring in 1983.


He was a member of North Street Baptist Church, where he served for 45 years as church clerk. He was a member of the former North Street School Board, which operated the one-room North Street School, and was a 50-year member of Port Huron Lodge 18, Knights of Pythias, where he was currently serving as vice chancellor.


He was previously active in the North Street 4-H Saddle Club; delivered Meals on Wheels for years; was a member of the Council On Aging's Pepper Club; and was a member of the Lake Huron Marine Lore Society.


He is survived by his wife, Nina M. Brown of North Street; his daughter, the Rev. Lorolie Brown of Cincinnati; his son, Gregory (Julie) Brown of North Street; two grandsons, Brent and Jason Brown, both of North Street; two sisters, Gladys McCluskey, Port Huron and Ruth (Edward) Krumlauf of North Street; and several nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and John Brown; and two sisters, Leona Bowen and Dorothy Kathrien.


A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2000, in the Port Huron Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Scott Stapleford and the Rev. Lars Hasper will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.


Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the church.


Pallbearers will be Clifton and Robert Brown, Robert Charles, Ray Dau, Robert White, Paul Bishop, Gary McNaughton and Vance VanNess.


Memorial contributions may be made in Wesley's memory to the North Street Baptist Church.
