Netta Maxine Tooley Dalton

     Netta Maxine Tooley Dalton, 79, of Mountain Home, died Saturday, May 15, 1993, at a Mountain Home nursing home.

     Memorial services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 21, 1993, at the St. James Episcopal Church in Mountain Home with Rev. Pat Calenback officiating. Private family inurnment will be conducted earlier Friday, at the Mountain View Cemetery in Mountain Home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Summers Funeral Homes, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home.

     Maxine was born July 15, 1913, in Anselmo, Nebraska, the eldest child of Donald E. and Mary Elizabeth Tooley, who homesteaded and raised their family in Jerome. After graduating from Jerome High School and attending Idaho State University, she married Ursus Dalton in 1936. They then settled in Payette, where they established Dalton's Upholstery following World War II work in Bremerton, Washington.

     Her teaching career in Mountain Home, was as a math instructor at the Mountain Home Junior High School for 17 years. She continued her advanced degree work at Denison University, Granville, Ohio. She retired from teaching in 1978.

     A 30 year resident of Mountain Home, she was an active member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Mountain Home, serving on the Altar Guild and the vestry and as a member of the cursillo. She was a former member of the Mountain Home Library Board and of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was active in Payette community affairs and frequently served as chair of the local blood drive. She also participated in book clubs. She enjoyed several cruises and travels with friends, as well as several bridge groups. An avid reader and craftswoman, she created crewel work and leaded glass miniatures. She also enjoyed crosswords, collecting baskets and taking pride in her gardens and roses.

     Maxine succumbed to a long struggle against cancer but continued her interests and participation in national cancer research programs. She will be remembered for her quick wit, as well as being a good listener and substitute grandmother and mother to many friends she regarded as "family". She particularly enjoyed her long-time Payette and Mountain Home friends and her fellow educators.

     Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann D. and Joseph Shepard Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Brook and Brian Shepard; Jeanette, Susan, and Cheryl Dalton and Layne Thaut. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Paulette Dalton Thaut; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" and husband Charles Otto, Jerome, and Coral and husband Warren Saunders, Garden Valley; one brother, Major USMC ret. John J. "Jack" Tooley of Orlando, Florida; and several special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Lt. Col. John F. Dalton, a 1964 Mountain Home High School Graduate, USNA, MSMC, in 1983; and a sister, Lois Jean Miller Barry.
