Pilgrimage To Grave Of EUB Pioneer Will Be Held
The annual pilgrimage to the grave side of one of the founders of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, the Reverend Jacob Albright, will be held tomorrow afternoon. Area members of the denomination will unite in a service in the historic Albright Memorial Church at Kleinfeltersville.
The speaker for the occasion will be Dr. N. L. Hummel of York, Conference superintendent of the Central Pa. Conference of the E. U. B. Church. The East Pa. Conference Chorus will sing for the meeting. Conference historians of the area will also participate in the festivities of the day.
The service at the church will be concluded by gathering at the grave of Albright in the adjoining church yard. Dr. C. E. Kachel of Reading, superintendent of the East Pa. Conference will conduct the grave side service. Tours of the immediate area will be conducted in the afternoon by Dr. P. B. Gibble of Myerstown, denominational historian. A map of the surrounding area will he provided for tourists by the conference historian, Rev. O. D. E. Pottieger of Terre Hill. A picnic area will be available for those who wish to bring a picnic lunch so that they can tour the surrounding countryside that evening.
This May meeting at Kleinfeltersville is significant in that Albright was born on May 1, 1759 and died May 18, 1808. It was 160 years ago that Albright set out on horse back from his home in Ephrata Township in Lancaster County to preach the gospel to his German speaking brethren. For 12 years, except for seasons when he would return to support his family by making tile, he preached in Penna., Maryland and Virginia. Sick and worn-out at 49, he was returning home from Linglestown, Dauphin Co. to die. He got as far as Kleinfeltersville, where he died in the home of his faithful friend, George Becker. Becker buried Albright in his private cemetery, where the denomination erected the Albright Memorial Church in 1850. [Lebanon Daily News, Friday May 18, 1956]]
