Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Port Byron. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Milan American Legion.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 20, 1938, in Barton, Vt., son of Floyd and Thelma Kinsley Smith. He married Jane Jordan Payne on Dec. 26, 1986, in Milan.

He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1978 after 22 1/2 years. He was employed by Kewanee Boiler Co. for 24 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Milan American Legion, the Sea Owl Association, the Milan Rifle Club and Orleans Lodge 55 AF & AM in Vermont.

He enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard and garden, and he most enjoyed puttering with different things.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Tina Marie Smith, Virginia Beach, Va., Lisa Smith, Kewanee; sons, Anthony Smith, Moline, Vincent Payne, Andalusia, and Chris Brasmer, Moline; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Mason, Barton.
