James Dallas Rasmussen, 69, died Jan. 18, 2011, at St. Elias Specialty Hospital in Anchorage. He was surrounded by his family.
Rasmussen was born May 22, 1942, in Preston, Idaho, to Dewey and Fern Wickham Rasmussen. He was the youngest of three boys.
He spent his early years in Weston, Idaho, until the family moved to a farm in Hazelton, Idaho, when he was 10. Dallas graduated from Valley High School in 1960 and later attended Idaho State University, where he met Jeanne Oswald. The two were married on July 27, 1962, in the Idaho Falls Latter Day Saints Temple. He graduated from Idaho State in 1965 with a degree in geology, then got a job working for the Alaska Department of Transportation in Juneau. In 1970, the family moved to Valdez, where he continued to work for D.O.T. until his retirement in 2002.
Rasmussen was active in church, community and family events. He held numerous leadership positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, served as a volunteer emergency medical technician for the Valdez Fire Department and was a member of the Valdez Community Hospital board. He also served as No.1 fan, referee, umpire, scorekeeper, and timekeeper for his children's numerous athletic events, and continued to keep time and score for the high school's sporting events after his children graduated.
Rasmussen was a loving husband, devoted father, and doting grandpa. He will be sorely missed by all those who love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Jay Dallas Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Rasmussen; brothers, Varge and Wayne Rasmussen; children, Tanya Jeanne Meyer (Scott), Jeff Andrew Rasmussen (Heidi), Julie Anna Riley (Tom), Aaron Lavon Rasmussen (Laurissa) and daughter-in-law Janette Rasmussen Swain (Trent); and 21 grandchildren.
The viewing is 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 750 Meals Ave., Valdez. The funeral will be at the same location at 10 a.m. the next day, with graveside services to follow at the Valdez City Cemetery.
