East Longmeadow – Karl Cook Bailey, age 93, of East Longmeadow, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, March 10, at the Jewish Nursing Home, Longmeadow, Massachusetts . Born in Medford, MA to the late Ernest Wing and Mildred (Cook) Bailey, he lived in Springfield and East Longmeadow for most of his life. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn (Barton) Bailey in 2000.

Karl attended Northeastern University and received his Bachelor's degree from Western New England College. He was owner of Karl Bailey Associates for over 20 years. He was employed by Standard Electric Time Company, Springfield, and Hampden Engineering in East Longmeadow for many years.

He lived with his young family in Dalton, Pennsylvania during World War II where he served as a volunteer firefighter, going door to door during air raid drills and blackouts checking on town residents. In Dalton, he, an Eagle Scout himself, also served as Scoutmaster. He was Sunday School superintendent at the Dalton Methodist Church. An active churchman, he was also a member of Wesley Methodist Church, Springfield, East Longmeadow Methodist Church, and East Longmeadow First Congregational Church during his lifetime. At various times he served in positions as church treasurer, building committee chairman, couples' club president and deacon.

His interests were varied. As a young man he was active in 4-H poultry activities. For a time he and his family grew vegetables, and later Christmas trees for sale, on the family Pease Road property. He served as PTA President at Birchland Park School, East Longmeadow. He was a member and past president of the Engineering Society of Western Massachusetts. As a retiree he was a nursing home volunteer and received recognition as Volunteer of the Year from the East Longmeadow Nursing Home. He was an avid tennis fan and player well into his senior years. He was a active member of the Springfield Chapter of a Northeastern University fraternity most of his adult life.

He is survived by his son, Karl C. Bailey, Jr. of Hampden; his three daughters, Phyllis Chase Lurvey and her husband Dr. Allan Lurvey of Stratham, NH, Barbara Dumont and her husband John of Chicopee and Virginia Blake and her husband Larry of Hampden; a sister, Alice Longley of Middletown, Connecticut; nine grandchildren, David and William Chase, Sarah Yvon and Whitney Burton, Corinne and Thomas Dumont and Joshua, Jacob and Paige Bailey; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Connor Chase, and by several nieces and nephews and extended family. Besides his loving wife, Evelyn, he was also predeceased by his son, Ernest W. Bailey in 2005 and by his sister, Villa Crowell.

Family and friends are invited to meet for a service of celebration of Karl's life at 10 a.m. Monday, March 14, at the First Congregational Church, 7 Somers Road, East Longmeadow Center. Burial at Hillcrest Park Cemetery will be private. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 13, from 3-7 p.m. at the Byron-Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen St., Springfield.
