2LT William Butler Bonham was the 11th child of BG/Gov. Milledge Luke Bonham
and Anne Patience Griffin of South Carolina.
He moved to Georgia and enlisted in the Georgia Militia, rising to the rank of 1SG
of that unit. He continued to serve until called up to Federal Military service
at the onset of the Spanish American War. He served with distinction and was commissioned
a 2LT in the US Army. After the war, he served as an Engineer on the Panama Canel, where he
contracted TB, which later killed him.
He was married to Mary Edward Graves of Edgefield, SC.
They are both buried at Arlington National Cemetary beside their son (MAJ Francis Graves Bonham, USA deceased and his
wife, Louise Law Walker of Barboursville, VA).
