The only son of Anna and Moses Scott, he was named for Dr.(Gen.) Joseph Warren, a friend of Dr. Scott's killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He married Jane Griffiths in 1804 and had 8 children. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of the NJ bar. As a lawyer, he became an eminent judge and politician and was Treasurer General of the Society of Cincinnati. He bought the "White House" in New Brunswick and named it Buccleuch Mansion after an ancestral home. It became the scene of extended, idyllic summertime visits by many cousins from the NJ/NY area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The home was given to the city in 1911 by his grandson, Anthony Dey.
