William Carson was born in New Brunswick, Canada. He came to California in the gold rush of 1849 to 1850. He did not strike it rich until he switched his focus from gold to lumber. By 1854 Mr. Carson was operating a mill in Humboldt County. In San Francisco in 1864 William Carson married Sarah Wilson, she was from his home town in New Brunswick. They had four children, John Milton, Carlotta, Charles Sumner, and William Wilson.

"The beautiful residence on the mill site, at the head of Second street, was one of the most significant indications of Mr. Carson's affection for Eureka. This palatial dwelling, not excelled by any other home in the state, was one of his most important contributions to the beautifying of his chosen city, the scene of the interests closest to his heart."

William, along with his wife and other family members, was in 1942, removed from the Carson Crypt at Myrtle Grove Cemetery, and then re-encrypted at Sunset Memorial Cemetery
