Alva Monroe Rideout was the youngest of the four sons of David Oliver Rideout, Sr. and Lucinda Rilla Ann Mariah Reid. He was born in the Montana Territory. He changed his last name to Hall in order to distance himself from his father. Uncle Alva was tall and skinny, standing at over six feet. He had blue eyes and blonde hair. I believe he was my mother's favorite uncle. She thought he was pleasant, kind and jolly, and liked to laugh. He had taught his horse to walk across the tall railroad trestle on Evaro Hill, which is not far from Missoula. Great Grandma Lucinda Neas lived in a log house in the valley below Evaro Hill. Grandma and the family eventually moved up into the panhandle of Idaho where they lived near Bonners Ferry. Their place was accessed by crossing a fallen log over the creek or forging across. He kept a large orchard, grapes and berries. Alva married when he was older to Charlotte Reifsteck (Lottie) in Bonners Ferry. Lottie got breast cancer, so Uncle Alva sold everything he had and took her to Rochester, Minnesota to try and get her doctored of her cancer. She died anyway. He later married Mary Loretta Norton. Uncle Alva died in the Weldon Rest Home at Missoula, Missoula County, Montana. He was the father of two sons, and a daughter who died in infancy. Wendy M. Van Roekel, June 2010
