"Father of Dr. Smoyer of North Tonawanda Found Lying Dead Behind His Barn

"-Sensational Reports.-

"Doctor Explains Matters.

"A heavy affliction has come to Dr. Smoyer of the Gratwick district. His father died suddenly, under peculiar circumstances, early yesterday morning. Daniel Smoyer, the deceased, was an old and respected resident of the Town of Pendleton, and his sudden and very sad death has created a sensation in that town and caused painful surprise to the many friends of Dr. Smoyer in this city. A Lockport dispatch gives the following particulars regarding Mr. Smoyer's death:

"A sudden death in the town of Pendleton, this county, has created a small sensation in that vicinity. Daniel Smoyer was one of the best-known men of the town, and the owner of a large and profitable fruit farm. Last night Mr. Smoyer retired in his usual good health, it is said. About 6 o'clock this morning his body was found behind a large barn near the house. The condition of the body showed that life had been extinct but a short time. The body was discovered by a member of the family, who says that he got up about 5:30 o'clock, and that he was on his way to one of the smaller farm buildings near the barn, when he noticed the body which upon investigation, proved to be that of Mr. Smoyer. Coroner H. H. Mayne of this city was notified as soon as possible, and he went at once to the scene. He called a jury, which will meet on Tuesday evening, at Pendleton, to inquire into the cause of death. Physicians who were called as soon as the body was discovered, say that they were unable to discover any apparent cause of death.

"Some of the incidents connected with the affair have furnished to the gossips of the town material for a possible sensation, and much comment has been indulged in. Daniel Smoyer was a German, and was 59 years old. Dr. Burt Smoyer of North Tonawanda is a son. The Twin City friends of Dr. Smoyer tender him sincere sympathy in his affliction.

"Mystery Explained.

"Later this afternoon a NEWS reporter was successful in obtaining an interview with Dr. Henry Smoyer, the only son of the deceased Daniel Smoyer. The Doctor said: 'the story that appeared in a Buffalo paper is entirely false. I wish to have THE NEWS state the facts.'

"'At 4:15 yesterday morning-after threshing the day before-father got up and lighted the lamp on the dining room table. Mother was awake at the time and heard him walking about, and, as father is an early riser, thought nothing was wrong. A hemorrhage of the lungs caused father to go to the stove, where a quantity of blood escaped. He went from there to the summer kitchen, and, after opening one door went to the rear door. He then went down the steps and turned a few feet to the left, where a pool of blood was found. From there he must have gone to the right a few feet; where he dropped to the ground and died.

"'At 4:40 mother awoke and, finding that father had not returned, went out to look tor him. She found him a few feet from the steps, dead. Her screams brought some of the neighbors, who carried father back to the house.'

"Daniel Smoyer leaves a wife, and one son, Dr. Smoyer of North Tonawanda. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from his late home at 1 o'clock and from the German Lutheran Church at Shawnee at 2 o'clock."
