US Congressman. He attended the University of Texas, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1929 and commenced to practice law in Palestine, Texas. He was Attorney of Anderson County (1931-35) and District Attorney of the third judicial district of Texas (1935-45). In 1944, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-ninth Congress and reelected to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1952. After his term, he was Vice President of the National Coal Association (1952-61) and Vice President of the Association of American Railroads (1961-67).
