Florence - Zarvis Thomas Ford, Sr., 84, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Funeral service will be 2 pm Friday, Feb. 6 in St. Paul United Methodist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Mausoleum.

He was born in Floyds a son of the late Daniel Roy and Mary Eunice Jackson Ford. He graduated in 1941 from Clemson University where he was a member of the Alpha Zeta Fraternity.

He was on active duty with the U.S. Army Infantry as lieutenant from June 27, 1941 to Aug. 26, 1944. He attended Officers Communication School and served as battalion communication officer until discharged because of disability. He was a first lieutenant when discharged. He served in World War II.

He was a research agronomist with the USDA for 25 years and then worked as an agronomist with the Pee Dee Branch of the Clemson Experimental Station.

Mr. Ford was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and the Ed Rivers Bible Class.

Survivors are his wife, Edith Todd Ford of Florence; a daughter, Betty Ford Ayers of Edinburg, Va.; a son, Zarvis Thomas "Tom" Ford, Jr. of Florence; two sisters, Sara Connelly and Bernice Nunnery, both of Nichols; three brothers, Edgar Ford of Cerro Gordo, NC, Roy Ford of Chesapeake, Va., and Bennett Ford of Floyds; and four granddaughters, Suzanne Ford, Elizabeth Ford, Carolyn Ayers, and Robin Ayers.

The family will receive friends 6-8 pm today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Methodist Church, 1629 W. Palmetto St., Florence, SC, 29501.
