Justice of the Peace and Presiding Judge for Los Angeles Township, starting in 1892. Veteran of the Civil War, Corporal, Company A, First Dakota Volunteers, 1861 to 1865. The son of James and Jessie (Brown) Young of Scotland, he came to America in 1853, and after service in the Civil War he began to study law in Independence, Iowa, in 1869. Admitted to the bar in 1872, he was the first Prosecuting Attorney for Worth County, Iowa. He married Lottie Gifford in 1870, and the family moved to Southern California in 1888. He practiced law in Los Angeles, both individually and in partnership with his son, attorney William H. Young, and he served as Justice of the Peace from 1892 to 1895, from 1900 to 1903, and from 1911 to 1917, during which time he became the first Presiding Judge of the Township Courts of Los Angeles. After the death of his wife Charlotte in 1904, he married Julia Miller in 1909. Another son, Edward R. Young, was also an attorney.
