Whitney Messenger Thursday February 15, 1940

Whitney citizens were shocked last weekend to learn of the death of Mrs. J. H. Shelley of Whitney, who was visiting in the home of her son, Tom Shelley at Raisin City, California. Mrs. Shelley had been visiting on the West Coast for three months past, and was ill for only three days with pneumonia preceding her death last Friday, February 9.
Nancy Margaret Shelley widow of J. H. Shelley who died two years ago, had been a resident of this community for fifty years. She was born August 21, 1859, near Gainsville, Ga. She married to Mr. Shelley on December 19, 1878, in Lumpkin county, Georgia, and to this union nine children were born, four girls and five boys, two of whom preced their parents in death.
The family moved to Whitney in 1890 and since that time the family home remained here.
Mrs. Shelley had been a Baptist since early in life and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitney.
Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. Levi Price, pastor at the First Baptist Church of Whitney at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, February 14. Interment was in Bethelhem Cemetery under the direction of Marshall and Marshall.
The seven surviving children are: Mrs. J. L. Barker of Camanche; Mrs. O.E. Cierley of Dos Palos, Calif.; Mrs. Jewel Parks of Dos Palos, Calif.; Ernest Shelley of Pertsburg,Texas; W.A Shelley SanAntonio; T.O. Shelley Gorman and T. H. Shelley of Raisin City, Calif.; one brother, W.B.Wootten of Hillsboro also survives. All of the children were present for the funeral services except Mrs. Parks.
