Irene D. Desmond, 83, died Thursday at a Waterville nursing home. She was born in West Farmington, a daughter of John R. and Elmira Cormier Dustin. She grew up in Rumford and graduated from Stevens High School.
She moved to Oakland in 1934, where she worked as an inspector for Diamond Match Company for several years. She lived in Boston during her first marriage and then returned to the Waterville area and worked for New England Telephone Company. Mrs. Desmond then moved to Indiana, where she worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company as a general office staff assistant.
She returned to Maine once more, working as chief operator of communications for Waterville Osteopathic Hospital. She retired in 1981.
She married Waslau S. Papienuk on Dec. 29, 1939. He died June 23, 1943.She married Gerald G. Desmond on Oct. 19, 1946. He died on Oct. 18, 1969, at their home in Indiana.
Mrs. Desmond was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Oakland. She was a former member of the Waterville Garden Club, Ladies Auxiliary of Winslow Post no. 8835 and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Surviving are three sisters, Evelyn C. Dustin and Dorothy Ahearn, both of Oakland, and Patricia A. Wood of Griffin, Ga.; and a brother, John R. Dustin Jr. of Oakland. (Maine Sunday Telegram 12/20/1998)
