Arthur "Art" L. Nygaard, 75, of Big Timber passed away Thursday, August 8, 2002 at the Pioneer Medical Center after a brief struggle with cancer.

He was born June 25, 1927 near Scranton, ND to Ole and Ella Nygaard. He attended school in Columbus.

Art served his country from January 1949 through January 1950 and September 1950 through November 1951 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Betty J. Boe on December 16, 1951.

In 1953 Art went to work at Oie Motor Company in Big Timber. In 1969 he was employed by IBC "Sweetheart Bread" as a salesman and driver. He retired in 1989.

After his retirement he worked summers at the Big Timber Waterslide for nine seasons.

Art was a member of the Big Timber Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 19 and Timber Trippers Square Dance Club. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, and woodcarving.

His parents, sister Myrtle and two half-sisters, Bernice and Evelyn, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Big Timber; two daughters, Elaine and Marc Self of Salem, OR and Christy and Ken Robinson of Billings; one son, Dan and Cheryl Nygaard of Renton, WA; six grandchildren: Rachelle and David Zackus, Shalisa, Donita and Paul Maberry, and Evan and Ben Nygaard; one great grandchild, Cedara Zackus; one step great grandchild, Ashton Zackus; one sister, Edna and Ben Raisland of Big Timber; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Art will be fondly remembered by his friends and family for his sense of humor, a desire to help others and pride in his Norwegian heritage.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 12 at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Pastor Jim Holmlund officiated. Graveside committal followed in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Brownlee, Nat Clark, Kenny Hogemark, Wayne Hansen, Jim Esp and Gene Sondeno. Honorary pallbearers were all of his friends.

Memorials may be made to the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Lowry Funeral Home assisted the family with the services.
