Ellis Wayne Grant, 91, of Amarillo died Monday, March 14, 2011.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Brentwood Chapel, Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., with David Green, chaplain of Hospice of the Southwest, officiating. Private burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Mr. Grant was born to L.F. and Kathyrine Grant on Oct. 2, 1919, in Knoxville, Tenn. Mr. Grant grew up on a cotton farm in Geary, Okla., and attended Geary schools. He earned all-district honors in pole vaulting and liked to ride horses, play baseball and read. He moved to a farm near Hart in July 1942, and after that made his permanent address in Amarillo, where he worked on the construction of the Pantex Ordinance Plant. He became a line foreman at the plant and made 105 mm shells during World War II.

He was called into the service in November 1944. He served two years in 83rd Seabee Battalion at Pearl Harbor, China and the Philippines.

After the war, he became a bus driver for New Mexico Transportation Co., where he worked for 49 years. He set a record of driving 5 million miles without an accident.

The family would like to thank all of Mr. Grants' health care team at Hospice of the Southwest and the staff at Bluebonnet Assisted Living.

Mr. Grant was preceded in death by his mother; his father; a sister; seven brothers; his wife, Maxine Grant, who passed away Nov. 30, 2007; and a son, David, who passed away in 2000.

Mr. Grant is survived by two daughters, Pat Matthews and Judy Wallar, both of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

There will be a viewing at 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
