In the summer of 1870 he went to Prussia and served as a surgeon in the Prussian Army for one year. He received several medals from the Prussian government for his excellant service, including the Prussian service medal, and the medal of the golden cross. He also has a letter of gratitude for his service from the Prussian government. Dr. Ermentrout servrd as a surgeon in the Civil War. He married Emma Kepplemam and their children are Robert Lee who married Mary Yeity, and Edna Justina
