OBITUARY

Granville Jesse MATHIS was born to the home of Rev. and Mrs. Felix D. MATHIS of Phelps County, Missouri, August 21, 1891 and died September 29, 1947 at Taos, New Mexico at the age of 56 years, one month and 8 days. There were 12 other children born to this home, nine of whom have preceded him in death, his mother and father also having preceded him. At the age of one year, Jesse's family moved to Oklahoma, homesteading in Custer County in the year 1892. In 1906 the family moved to Hemphill County, Texas, where Jesse's father and mother passed away. Jesse being the only child left at the home moved to Colorado, homesteading there in 1916. On May 25, 1918, Jesse entered the service of the United States Army and was honorably discharged May 22, 1919, after six months overseas duty in France. Jesse's first established home after leaving the service of his country, was in Beaver, and it was at this time that Jesse made a public profesion of his faith in Jesus Christ as his own personal savior, uniting with the Beaver Baptist church by baptism. His membersip remained in this church through the years, and there at the time of his death. On July 9, 1922, he was united in marriage to Miss Merie ALLMAN of Beaver. There were born to this union three children: Donna Mae COTHRAN of Beaver, Donald J. of Cherokee and Jo Neil of the home. At the time of his death he and Mrs. MATHIS were operating the Mathis Clothier store of Beaver and had lived in or near Beaver since the time of their marriage. He leaves to mourn his death, his iwfe, and three children; also two granddaughters, Jacque Ann and Mary Beth COTHRAN; one brother, Lee MATHIS of Thomas; and two sisters, Mrs. _______ and Mrs. Ada HARDIN, both of Canadian, Texas; also a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Beaver gym Wedesday afternoon, October 1, at 2:30 pm with Rev. Hawkins officiating. The Beaver male quartet accompanied by Mrs. Evan, sand "Abide with Me", "Old Rugged Cross" and "Precious Memories". The American Legion conducted military services at the Beaver cemetery. The pallbearers were members of the Rodeo Club: Art THOMSON, Burl ALTMAN, Jim AKRIDGE, Otto BARBY, Floyd SUMRALL and Glen OYLER. The Goodner-mason Funeral Home was in charge. Out of town relatives here for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. D. HARDIN, Mr. and Mrs. Henry JAHNEL, Mr. and Mrs. Claud COOK, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo JAHNEL, and Mr. and Mrs. Buron HENDERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Walter FORESH, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. MATHIS, Mr. and Mrs. Edd LITTLE, all of Canadian, Texas; Lee MATHIS, Mrs. Ida MATHIS, Wash ROOF, Mr. and Mrs. Howard REED and Miss Mae MONTGOMERY, all of Thomas; Mr. and Mrs. Loyd MATHIS and daughter, Carol, of Woodward; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph MATHIS and Tom GRAHAM of Texhoma; Mr. and Mrs. Lillburn STENDER and Donald HEDGEPATH of Perryton, Texas; Mrs. Harry GRAFF of Pratt, Kansas; Clarence ALLMAN of Parson, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. ALLMAN of Britton; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Dean ALLMAN of Britton; Mr. and Mrs. Erple GRAFF of Tulsa; Mr. and Mrs. Edd NEAVILLE of Deerfield, Kansas; and Mr. and Mrs. Walter NEAVILLE of Shamrock, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. R.
