John Bruce Black, 73, of 2574 Young Road, Stone Mountain, GA passed away at his residence of a heart attack on Monday, March 29, 1971.

He was born in Kirkaldy, Scotland, a son of the late Alexander and Mary Carmichael Black. He was an electrical engineer, working for Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd in Glasgow, Scotland, before going to Calcutta, India to work for Burn & Co, Ltd, a shipbuilding organization. John's fiance, Dorothy Kathryn MacDonald of Renfrew later traveled by ship from Scotland to Calcutta where she and John were married in St. Andrews Church on November 16, 1925.

John and Dorothy, with their baby son Alastair came to the United States on board the ship "Transylvania," arriving in New York on August 14, 1927 from Glasgow. They went first to Dearborn, MI, where John worked for a short time in the auto industry. They then moved to Atlanta, GA where John worked in construction and engineering installations, both mechanical and electrical. At the time of his retirement, John was working as Plant Engineer, General Motors, Chevrolet Division in Atlanta. John became a naturalized US citizen January 29, 1941.

He always took a great deal of pride in his Scottish background and was greatly influenced by it. He was a self-educated man who achieved high degrees of competence in many areas of work and life...as an engineer, as a teacher, as a husband and father, and as a loyal friend to many. He was a life member of the Commercial Royal Arch Chapter and a life member of the Masonic Lodge, Albert Edward, Scotland.

John is survived by his wife Dorothy; two sons, Alastair MacDonald Black and Ian Carmichael Black, both of Stone Mountain, GA and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 31, 1971 at 4 pm in the Unitarian Church, Atlanta, GA with the Rev. Gene Pickett officiating. The family requests that flowers be omitted; those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association. Cloud Funeral Home, Lithonia, GA in charge of arrangements.

In our Black family tree, John Bruce is the paternal grandfather of my husband.
