Donald Godfrey was born May 1, 1933 in the Powell Knitting Mill Community, part of Spartanburg, South Carolina, according to his own biography he wrote on findagrave.com. Donald died on November 10, 2010 in Fresno, California at age 77. His burial was at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella Village, Merced County California.
Donald said his father was born in Cherokee County, South Carolina and his mother in Polk County, North Carolina and were married in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Donald said his father's father was born in McDowell County, North Carolina.
Donald's family moved to California when he was two weeks old, stayed a year and then moved back to South Carolina. They moved back to California to stay in 1936 settling in near Dinuba during his grade school years. Later they moved to "a little farm" near Kingsburg during his high school years.
Donald enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and retired after 20 years in 1971. Donald was married to Doris June Rippee Godfrey (1932 – 2009). He and Doris June were married nearly 60 years last year. Donald lived with his daughter Deborah K. Medeiros in Fresno. Donald said in his bio that "Genealogy keeps me going."
