Avis N Hawkins, 86, of 346 S Florida St., Buckhannon, died Monday, July 16, 2001, in Holbrook's Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
Mrs. Hawkins was born April 25, 1915, in Webster County, a daughter of the late John Richard and Mevina Cogar Chapman.
She married Norman G. Hawkins, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Hitt, Buckhannon; a son, John H. Christian, Joppa, Md.; a stepson, Glen Hawkins, Rock Cave; five stepdaughters, Geraldine Belt, Amhurst, Ohio, Carolyn Shreves and Frances Lockhart, both of Buckhannon, Kathy Abel, Palm Bay, Fla., and Jeannie Nicholes, Jacksonville, N.C.; two brothers, Gorman Chapman, Corvallis, Ore., and John Chapman of West Mifflin, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Fisher, Glenville; three granddaughters, Vicki Gramm, Widefield, Colo., Billie West and Lovie Bond, both of Buckhannon; three grandsons, Jake Hitt, Buckhannon, John C. Christian, Shefield Lake, Ohio, and Shane Hitt, Buckhannon; five great-grandsons, Michael Gramm and Eddie Gramm, both of Widefield, Colo., Justin Trumble, Stetson West and Logan Shane Hitt, all of Buckhannon; two great-granddaughters, Bonnie Bond, Buckhannon, and Danielle Gramm, Widefield, Colo.; and several stepgrandchildren, step great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 10 brothers, Foster Chapman, Sherman Chapman, Emil Chapman, Gordon Chapman, Victor Chapman, Grover Chapman, Lonnie Chapman, Clyde Chapman, Ward Chapman; and five sisters, Clara Cogar, Della Ogden, Mary Mick, Rosa Jamison and Ollis Huff.
Mrs. Hawkins was a licensed practical nurse and founder of Holbrook Nursing Home. She was a graduate of University of Hard Knocks. She was a lifetime member of French Creek Chapter 36 DAV Ladies Auxiliary, WCTU, LPN Association, and Holbrook Nursing Home Auxiliary. She attended Buckhannon Union Mission Church.
