James Barthalomew O'Sullivan ("Jim Bat") was said to have been born in Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland, approximately 1848. He emmigrated to the USA and arrived in New York on the 10th of December, 1892, on the ship "City of Chester". The ships log listed him as a farmer and 44 years of age. Also with him were Nellie (24), Nora (17), Ella B. (17), Mary M. (16), May (15), Jerry F. (11), Jes (10), and Dan V. (7). His wife, said to be Margaret Doherty O'Sullivan of County Mayo, is not listed and presumed to have died in Ireland. Family stories say he was a police officer who fell, hit his head on a stoop, and died. His death certificate backs that up and shows his death on the 27th of December, 1899. It lists him as 41, not the 51 the immigration record would indicate. Based on the ages of his children, 51 sounds more likely. He is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Queens, NY, Section 30, Range 3, Plot E, Grave 13 along with his daughter Ellen O'Sullivan Downing.
