Doyt Wayland Akom Jr., 68, of Newport, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his home.

He was born in Akron, Ohio, on June 15, 1942. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1989 as a master gunnery sergeant after 30 years of service. He was a charter member of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center, member of VFW Post No. 8986, Newport, and the Marine Corps League. He was an instructor with the N.C. Wildlife Hunter Education Program.

Service with military honors will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Home, Morehead City, with the Rev. Ben Ball officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia I. Akom of Newport; two daughters, Amy Nenninger of Titusville, Fla., and April Akom of Mims, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Jo Huffstetler of Clover, S.C., and Jennifer Nagel of Akron, Ohio; one stepson, John D. Richmond of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Colleen McKenzie of Barberton, Ohio; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Carteret County, P.O. Drawer 1619, Morehead City, NC 28557.
