GRANT, ELSIE CHRISTINE - longtime resident of Rockwood, Tenn., passed away in Decatur, Ga., December 12, 2001, after a period of declining health. Miss Grant was born in Rockwood, April 30, 1906, the third daughter of Aaron Thomas Grant and Decie Thompson Grant. Miss Grant attended Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens and graduated from East Tennessee State College (Later East Tennessee State University) in Johnson City, completing most of her education during the summer months while teaching full time in the Rockwood Schools. She attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Miss Grant was an elementary school teacher for over forty years. She began her career at the age of eighteen at Glen Alice and taught for many years in Rockwood. In the 1950's, she served five years as a civilian employee of the US Army, teaching in elementary schools at Amiens and Paris, France. She traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and frequently related interesting stories of her travels and experiences to her students and friends. She was a member of the Rockwood United Methodist Church and was active in a number of community and civic associations including the Business & Professional Women's Club, Garden Club, and Home Demonstration Club. Survivors include a sister, Ernestine Grant Lewis of Decatur, Ga.; a niece, Mary Lindsey Lewis; and a nephew, John W. Lewis, III, both of Decatur and a nephew, James H. Grant, Jr., of Hickory, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Rockwood United Methodist Church with Ed Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery . The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Scarbrough Funeral Home in Rockwood. Scarbrough Funeral Home of Rockwood directing services. (865) 354-1813.
