William R. Nantz was born in Gaston County on October 30, 1843. He enlisted for Civil War service in Company C, 1st Artillery, 10th Regiment, NC State Troops at age 18 on March 15, 1862. He served the remainder of the War and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, Va, on April 9, 1865. He returned to Gaston County after the War and died on January 15, 1915.

Married Dovey Cathleen Nance on 21 Dec 1867 in Lincoln County NC.
They were parents of 10 children.
