Rev. Hillis Avery, 74, Former Local Pastor, Dies in Mishawaka

Rev. Hillis L. Avery, 74, of South Bend, pastor of the local Main street Methodist church form 1934 until 1939, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's hospital in Mishawaka following an illness of two days.

Born in Clinton county, Aug. 6, 1886, he was the son of Charles W. and Clara (Hillis) Avery. His marriage on Oct. 7, 1908 was to Mary Beard and she survives.

He had served as an associate pastor of the First Methodist church in Mishawaka the past three years. Prior to his pastorate at Mishawaka he had served at the Huntington Methodist church. In 1958 he observed his 50th year as a minister. Rev. and Mrs. Avery also observed their golden wedding anniversary the same year.

Surviving besides the widow are two sons, J. Edwin, of Annapolis, Md., and William M. of Bethesda, Md.; two daughters, Mrs. George Cooper, of New Carlisle, Ind., and Mrs. Robert Vaughn, of Fremont, Ind.; thirteen grandchildren and one grandson; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Brown, of Dayton, Ohio, and two brothers, Frank and Charles, both of Clinton county.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) Saturday at the First Methodist church in Mishawaka. Burial will be in Hopewell cemetery in Clinton county. Graveside rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Friends may call at the Bent and Sprague funeral home in Mishawaka.
