Chester A. Kulch, 78, of 2 Keith St., in the Turners Falls section of Montague died Sunday in Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield. He was a machinist for the former Bendix Corp. of Greenfield for seven years, retiring in 1983. Previously, he worked at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Conn., for 10 years, and at the former Greenfield Tap & Die for many years. He later worked part-time with Phoenix Insurance Co. in Greenfield. Born in the Turners Falls section, he lived there most of his life. He was a 1938 graduate of Turners Falls High School, where he was class president. He was also captain and quarterback of the 1938 undefeated football team and also lettered in varsity basketball. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls, a former coach of Greenfield youth baseball and of YMCA youth basketball. He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Henrietta M. Sokoloski; two sons, Robert C. of Greenfield and Charles C. of Hudson, N.H.; two daughters, Sandra J. Merriott of Aurora, Calif., and Carole D. Hargrave of Williamsburg, Va.; a brother, Frank of Studio City, Calif.; three sisters, Alice Long of Turners Falls, Sophie Pierszlowski of Northridge, Calif., and Helen O'Brien of Hadley; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday morning in the church, with burial in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, both of Turners Falls. A calling hour will precede the funeral at Kostanski Funeral Home, Turners Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the church renovation fund at 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, MA 01376.
