Civil War Union Army Soldier. A native of Buckfield, Maine, he was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 20th ME Infantry on August 29, 1862. When his regiment, commanded by Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, arrived on the field at Gettysburg on the 2nd Day, they were immediately deployed to what became known as Little Round Top. In a twist of fate, they were the very end of the Union Army's line, and they had strict orders to defend it to the last man. The regiment would fend off repeated attacks by Confederates, then make one of the most famous regimental charges of the war as they counterattacked down the hill, finally driving the Confederates off, and capturing many prisoners. During the fighting Charles Beadle was shot, and would join the stream of Gettysburg wounded as they were sent to various hospitals in and around Philadelphia. He lasted with his wounds for another month before dying on August 6, 1863 at the Satterlee US Army General Hospital in West Philadelphia. Later that year his wife, Elvira D. Beadle, filed for and received a Widow's Pension.
