Max Lerner was a sociologist and a journalist known for a controversial syndicated column debuting in 1949 in the New York Post which eventually became a book titled "The Unfinished Country" consisting of a collection over 200 daily columns written over a decade earning him a place on the master list of Nixon political opponents.

Lerner also wrote "America as a Civilization: Life and Thought in the United States Today" (1957) which was a staunch opponent of discrimination against African-Americans and denounced the wartime internment of Japanese Americans.

Lerner was the Editor of The Nation from 1936-38

Lerner was a considered a liberal, however, in later years he was seen as a neo-conservative due to expressing support for the Ronald Reagan administration.

His book "Wrestling with the Angel" dealt with his long term illness.
His cause of death is unspecific..
