Jeremy Dickinson Warner was born May 23, 1813 in Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, and died May 22, 1901 in Lewis County, Missouri. He was the son of Jonathan Coleman Warner and Achsah Dickinson. He was descended from Andrew Warner who emigrated from Essex County, England in 1632 with his wife, Mary Humphrey. On his mother's side, he was descended from Nathaniel Dickinson who emigrated from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England in 1634. They were part of the "Great Migration" of religious dissenters who settled in New England.
Both families were among the first settlers of Hartford Connecticut, but in 1659 a religious disagreement caused a schism in the community and they both joined a large group led by Rev. Hooker, and they founded the city of Hadley, Massachusetts, in Hampshire County.
When Jeremy was still in his 20s, he walked from Amherst to Waukesha, Wisconsin. According to family legend, he carried with him a ham, given to him by his mother. Whether Wisconsin was his original goal, or whether he simply quit walking when he ran out of ham will never be known for certain.
He bought land and farmed in Waukesha and in May, 1841 he married Emily Rathbun, born 1814 in New York State. Her father was Benjamin Bagnal Rathbun of the Block Island, R.I. Rathbuns. They had 5 sons and one daughter (who died in her first year), and the 3 older boys all served in the Civil War. The 3rd son, Frederick Denison Warner died of blood poisoning in Tennessee and is buried with his parents, as is Celia Perdue Warner, the first wife of Benjamin F. Warner, their 4th son.
