She died in the intensive care unit of the Williamsport Hospital about two hours after the car she was driving crashed on Route 654, three miles west of DuBoistown. She was taken to the hospital in the DuBoistown Fire Company ambulance. She was treated in the emergency room and transferred to the intensive care unit. The weather that day was: Thundershowers ending in the evening, clearing that night with temperatures in the low 80s. She died of a crushed chest, according to Dr. Arthur R. Taylor, deputy coroner. No inquest was held. Her death was termed as accidental. She was driving west on Route 654 at 8:00 AM, her 1963 compact car ran off the right side of the road and crashed into several junked cars and halted several hundred feet ahead. She was in the small car when the ambulance arrived. The little demolished car was valued at $700.

She was born on a Tuesday, a daughter of Willis S. MacMichael and Sarah (Ott) MacMichael. Shirley was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of American Legion, Post 7863 of DuBoistown. She served as a WAVE in World War II.

At the time of death, she was survived by three sisters: Mrs. Clarabel Keyser, Williamsport; Mrs. Sally Hester, Williamsport; and Mrs. Betty Avery, San Diego, California.
