Nellie L. Tuttle (Burke), 96, passed away Tuesday evening at the Tonganoxie Nursing Home. She was born November 25, 1910 in Quincy, Illinois to Thomas and Elizabeth (Wendel) Burke.
The family moved to Leavenworth, Kansas when Nellie was very young. She attended the Old Cathedral School.
Nellie married John Collins in 1928. The family moved to Oklahoma City, OK in 1931. Nellie attended beauty college and became a licensed beautician in Olklahoma City, OK. She also took Advanced Hair Styling in New York City, NY. She was a homemaker for her family and worked as a hair stylist in Oklahoma City until illness forced her into retirement. She moved back to Leavenworth, KS to be with her family. Nellie married Lynton "Tut" Tuttle in 1971. Tut preceded her in death in 1990.
Nellie was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 23 and 8-40, a lifetime member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary 56. She also did volunteer work for the American Legion and Auxiliaries.
She is survived by a son: Harold Dean Collins and his wife Marty of Yukon, OK; eleven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son: Russell Earl Collins; an infant daughter: Nellie Collins; three brothers: Edward Burke, John "Jack" Burke and Thomas "Tommie" Burke; seven sisters: Elizabeth Burke, Agnes Klotz, Marie Hatfield, Christina "Tini" Crow, Katherine Burke, Edna Burke, and Margaret Taylor.
