Sarah Resnik Belfer (née Polensky), a legal secretary for many years, died March 7 at age 89. Mrs. Belfer was thrust into the limelight after her daughter Dr. Judith A. Resnik, the first Jewish woman in space, was killed in the Challenger explosion Jan. 28, 1986. After the disaster, Mrs. Belfer received letters and tributes from around the world honoring her daughter and the other astronauts.

Mrs. Belfer sang in many choirs. As a member of the Schnurmann and Luther House choir, she performed "God Bless America" in a local memorial tribute to her daughter after the Challenger disaster.

A Chicago, Ill., native, Mrs. Belfer lived in Akron and later moved to Cleveland. She was a member of Hadassah, ORT, and the Retired Business and Professional Women's Club at The Mandel JCC.

Mrs. Belfer was predeceased by her daughter Dr. Judith Resnik. She is survived by her son Dr. Charles Resnik of Owings Mills, Md.; three grandchildren; and sister Sylvia Hafner.
