Nels was born to John Nelson and Elsa Nelson and never married. He lived on the family farm land of 40 acres along Rock River near Stillman Valley, which he bought from his parents before they died. He lived in a modular home next to the original family house, which was built in 1933 but abandoned in 1984 for safety reasons. Nels was cremated and his ashes buried behind his parents grave marker.
