Verna (Alexander) Bauer, 87, Bismarck, died March 17, 2011, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, due to a recent stroke. Services will be held Tuesday, March 22, at 11 a.m., in Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Wes Aardahl officiating. Spring burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery, Turtle Lake.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m.

Verna was born June 11, 1923, at Mandan, N.D., the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Friedrich) Kottsick. She was raised south of Mandan on the family farm and attended rural schools.

Verna married Julius Alexander in 1946 in Mandan. They lived north of Turtle Lake, where they farmed. Julius died in 1961.

Verna married Adolph Bauer in 1967 in Turtle Lake. They farmed northeast of Turtle Lake. Adolph died in 1977. Verna moved to Bismarck in 1979, where she had since resided.

Verna was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and an auxiliary member of the Mandan Eagles Club. She enjoyed gardening and baking, including making kolache, strudel and lutefisk. Verna enjoyed a good pinochle game and especially enjoyed the times spent with her family and grandchildren.

Verna is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Ileen (Mike) Silvernagel, Bismarck; her sons and daughter-in-law, Cliff Alexander, Turtle Lake, Ted Alexander, Stiegler, Okla., and William (Jan) Alexander, Ralston, Wyo.; her five grandchildren, Cory (Sarah) Alexander, Eric (Jamie) Alexander, Katie Alexander (Justin Winke), Josh Silvernagel, Nicole Silvernagel; and four great-grandchildren, Austin, Ashley, Ethan and Aspen; her two brothers, Walter (Jean) Kottsick, Pick City, and Ben (Anna) Kottsick, Mandan; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Bauer, Minot, and Eva Bauer, Westhope; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; grandson, Brian; and her sister and brother-in-law, Freda (Harvey) Morrow.
