Robert C. Adams, 96, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community, Carlisle. He was born on Saturday, August 29, 1914, in Willow Hill, a son of the late Thomas J. Adams and Mintie (Wineman) Adams.
Bob was a 1934 graduate of Fannettsburg High School and was a US Army veteran of WWII. He was formerly employed with Hafer Construction, Chambersburg, Beetem Lumber Co., Carlisle and Keystone Lumber in Biglerville. Bob started the Pre-Fab Housing Department for both Beetem and Keystone Lumber. He attended the Carlisle Reformed Presbyterian Church, Carlisle. Bob also worked as a surveyor during the construction of PA Turnpike. He regularly attended the Fitness Image and Gold's Gym until the age of 90. He was a member of the Eastern King Pigeon Club from 1970 to 2005, and traveled throughout the eastern United States to participate in pigeon shows and events. Bob was also a life member of the American Legion in St. Thomas.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Ethel (Christman) Adams, daughters; Barbara L. (and her husband, Walter F., III) Nickel of East Berlin and Dorothy A. Becker of Carlisle, brother, Fred Adams of Fannettsburg, grandchildren; Brien Nickel, Nathan Nickel, Jessica Becker Brewbaker, David Becker, Keith Becker and Todd Becker, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by brothers; Glenn, Frank, Ernest, Clarence and Thomas Adams and a son-in-law, Robert Thomas Becker.
Funeral services to celebrate Bob's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor King Counts officiating. Viewing will be held on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until time of services. Burial with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.
