Dr. Winn, Church and Community Leader For 29 Years, Dead At 56
Dr. Harold B. Winn Sr., 56, of 197 Jennings Ave., pastor of the First Friends Church here for 29 years, and past president of the Salem Ministerial Association, died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Salem Community Hospital East Unit following a prolonged illness.
Born Aug. 5 1920, in Alliance, he was the son of Frank and Roselia Brantingham Winn. Dr. Winn came to Salem in 1947 after serving five years in a pastorate at Hughesville, Pa.
He was graduated from Alliance High School in 1938 and attended Cleveland Bible College (now Malone College) in Canton and the School Theology at Winona Lake, Ind. He received an honorary doctorate from Malone in 1969 and was chairman of the board of the college.
He was presiding clerk of the Evangelical Friends Church Eastern Region for 15 years and was district superintendent of Friends churches. He was named to "Who's Who in Religion in America" in 1975 and was Malone's "Alumnus of the Year" in 1971. A Harold B. Winn memorial scholarship fund for ministerial students will be established at the college.
He was a member of the Salem Rotary Club and the Goshen Center Ruritan Club. He served on the boards of the Salem Community Foundation, the Salem Historical Society, the Right to Life movement, the Salvation Army and the Salem Area Bicentennial Committee.
He was past president of the Sebring Camp meeting, Salem Ministerial Association, Malone College Alumni Association and the Evangelical Friends Association.
He had written a column, "Friend to Friend," in the Farm and Dairy publication for over 18 years and had broadcasted every week over WBBW in Youngstown, WFAH in Alliance and WSOM in Salem for over 25 years. He was contributing editor to the Evangelical Friend and began the "Dial-A-Prayer" service here. He was chaplain to the city police and fire departments.
Besides his widow, the former Wilda Santee, whom he married Aug. 12, 1942, he leaves his mother of Alliance; a son, Harold B. (Bud & Melanie) Winn Jr. of Dover; a daughter Mrs. Frank (Ruth Ann) Raymond of Park Forest, Ill; three sisters, Mrs. Curtis (Anna June) Chambers of Englewood, Mrs. Richard (Mary Helen) Krebs of Charlotte, Mich., and Mrs. Paul (Florence Mae) Ross of Haviland, Kan.; a brother Donovan Winn of Winona, and three grandchildren. A brother, Charles, died in 1955.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Friends Church with Dr. Byron L. Osborne, president emeritus of Malone College, and Rev. Ben Staley and Rev Richard Sartwell, both of the church, officiating.
Burial will be in East Goshen Friends Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Arbaugh-Pearce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
