MUNDAY- Charles Baker, longtime business and Civic Leader of Munday, died Thursday, March 10, 2011, in the Munday Nursing Home.
Born August 14, 1925 to Pitzer and Marie Baker, Charles was a third generation Munday resident. His grandfather, W.A. Baker, was one of the original settlers of Munday, opening a business there in 1902.
Charles married Betty Golden June 15, 1947, in Denton, Texas, in the Little Chapel in the Woods.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, Charles established Charles Baker Insurance in 1954 and was active in the Munday business community until the time of his death. For many years he served on he Munday School Board and was privileged to be president for several terms. Charles was also president of the Munday Chamber of Commerce that awarded him Citizen of the Year in 1963 and in 2010. The Chamber honored Charles and Betty as Citizens of the Century in 1999. During the Munday School Homecoming celebration in 2010, the Homecoming Committee presented Charles with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his service to the school and the community of Munday. The Keep Munday beautiful Committee announced at the same meeting that the new memorial park would be the Charles Baker Memorial Park. The Munday Lions Club was of special interest to Charles. With over 26 years' perfect attendance, he served in all offices of this organization, including Zone Chairman and Deputy District Governor. Long active in the Boy Scouts of America, he was honored by the Northwest Texas Council with the coveted Silver Beaver Award in 1968. He once served as Chairman of the 14th District Committee on Admissions for the Supreme Court of Texas and the State Board of Law Examiners, Charles served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank in Munday for 40 years and served as Chairman of that board at the time the bank was sold. Charles was proud that he was a 10-gallon donor to the Red Cross Blood Mobile.
An avid sports fan, Charles was the "Voice of the Moguls" for over 15 years and was one of the organizers of the Munday Little League. A member of the First United Methodist Church and a Certified Lay Speaker, he served as Chairman of the Board and for many years taught a Young Married Couples Sunday school class that was attended by many couples from other denominations.
Baker was preceded in death by his parents and by one grandson, Ross Baker, in 2007.
He is survived by Betty, his wife of 63 years; two sons and their wives, Bobby and Teresa Baker, and Bill and Kathy Baker, all of Weatherford, Texas; two grandchildren, Sandy Baker Doggett and husband Chad; and Whitney Baker and fiance Allen Flack. He is also survived by one brother, Kenneth Baker, and his wife Joy of Munday; niece Kerri Urbanczyk and nephew Chris Baker.
Visitation is at the McCauley-Smith Funeral Home Friday, March 1 l at 6-7 P.M.
Services will be held Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Munday with Rev. Pam Lehman, pallor, officiating, assisted by Adrian Fletcher of the Munday Church of Christ. A private burial will be held under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
