WABASH VALLEY DIRECTOR A.J. MCALLISTER DIES AT 79

Dr. A.J.McAllister, 79, a member of the board of Directors of Wabash Valley Hospital Mental Health Center, died at 10 p.m. Thursday in Home Hospital. He had been ill several years.

He was born and educated in Logansport. In 1924 he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in engineering. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi and Phi Delta Theta fraternities. In 1975 he received the degree of Doctor of Engineering from Purdue for his creative entrepreneurship and for his many accomplishments in business, engineering and civic affairs.

Dr. McAllister was president of Fairfield Mfg. Co. from 1931-1950, and on the board of directors of Ross Gear Tool Co. from 1943-1964. He was director of Purdue National Bank from 1944-1978 and from 1972-1978 was a member of the Bank Advisory Board. He also was president and general manager of Detroit Gear Division of Borg Warner for two years. In 1955 was appointed by the governor as a Trustee of Purdue.
In 1968 Gov. Roger Branigin awarded Dr. McAllister the Governor's Council of the Sagamores of the Wabash. In 1977 he was honored for his 30 years as President of the Indiana Alumni Association Board of Phi Delta Theta.

Dr. McAllister was instrumental in setting up the Industrial Division of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. He served as director of the National Association of Manufacturers and was associated with Floyd Lux in the real estate business. He was a long-time, active member of the Purdue Research Foundation.

He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, John Purdue Club and the Masonic Lodge.He lived at 1401 S.9th St. In 1929 he was married in Logansport to Dorothy Newby, who survives. Dr. and Mrs. McAllister have been contributors to the Lafayette Board of Parks and the park board established McAllister Park and McAllister Center in their names. The widow is the only immediate survivor.
