James was the son of John Wesley, Jr.
and Martha A. (Cotton) Lay. He was
first married to Winnie Alice Kesner
on 27 September 1885 in Mulberry,
Crawford Co., Arkansas. They were
the parents of five children.

Winnie was the dau. of Wm. Andrew
and Phoebe (Hankins) Kesner. She
was born 9 Februry 1870 in Leslie,
Searcy Co., Arkansas and died 9
September 1902 in Idaho.

James married Laura Jane (Birdsong)
Harper abt.1911 in Arkansas. They
had one child: Alvis O. b. 1912.
Laura was born 3 May 1873 in Mo.,
the dau. of Wm. and Mary M. (Brown)
Birdsong.
